Today is International Women’s Day, and what better way to celebrate it than by reading the latest issue of Make Modern – a digital magazine run by three kickass, Aussie women?! When I grow up, I’d love to have the incredible passion and persistence that Lara, Kristy and Jane have demonstrated in starting and running this magazine! Three women spread around Australia, with children, and families, and family businesses, and renovations, and everything else life has to offer/throw at you… and they consistently bring out issues of Make Modern utterly jam-packed with inspiration, motivation, and style. Hats off to the Make Modern team!
So yes, issue 27 is now out! Fun fact – Make Modern held a poll on their Facebook page to vote for what quilt to feature on the front cover. They’ve actually had quite a few fun polls lately, so be sure to follow them there if you aren’t already.
In this issue, my Maths & Methods article is all about Hexie Time – the maths of working out widths and heights of hexagons, and the most efficient way to cut fabric for English paper piecing your hexies. Oh yes, very hexie…
Onto the pretty quilts! I adore the Inverted Pink Star quilt by Sylvia – she’s also interviewed in this issue, so you can get to know her a bit more. The composition of this quilt is so clever!
And talking of composition, I love how the hand quilting on Amanda’s Swallow Tailed Kite quilt is echoing the seam lines in the white space around the outside of the quilt. Also, that aqua solid is soooo pretty! My daughter would be all over it.
I am a sucker for scrappy low volume fabrics, and the ones used in Kristy’s Pretty Pineapples pillow are no exception. Very effective! Especially paired with that luscious rainbow of Alison Glass.
Talking of scraps, Jane has written a great article about working with scraps. I saw a pic of her scrap organisation on Instagram and was smitten – so clever!
If you haven’t already got a subscription to Make Modern, use the code 27special to purchase issue 27 for only AU$6 (expires Sunday March 10). Bargain! And let me know what is your favourite part of Make Modern!
