My love affair with the navy, coral, golden mustard, and teal colour palette goes back a long way. I think this churn dash quilt is the first evidence of it, and that’s from 6 years ago! So when it came time to pick the colours for a new quilt for our couch, I headed straight to my favourite palette.
For my month as queen of the first year of our quilting bee, I chose the Treasure Hunt quilt block, with my favourite palette and a specific placement of fabrics. I have shared previously about my design process in ending up where I did if you’d like to read more on that here. And there the 12 blocks sat. Until the second year, when we decided we’d make two blocks for each queen, something we’d kinda drifted into doing anyway previously. That was when I decided to ask my bee to repeat the same block again to quickly get my quilt up to size! Genius move, Alyce, genius move.
Sewing up the blocks was the perfect activity to break up all my sewing room unpacking and destashing and such at the end of last year/start of this year. I then handed it off to my longarm quilter, Katrina, to stitch her magic touch as she doesn’t mind quilting with minky backings, and that’s what this quilt needed.
You see, my family love a soft and snuggly blanket/sweater/etc. When I made my children their first bed quilts, they complained that they were too “cold” – AKA not super soft and snuggly and drapey like the blankets they had been using. Cue eye roll. This new family quilt for the couch? Needed to be soft and snuggly.
Spotlight sells some great options, and I decided that navy was the best option – will hide a multitude of sofa-related stains, right?! And Katrina suggested this beautiful Bubbles design that I liked for the softer round design with all the lines of the quilt top.
When I picked up the quilt, I headed straight to Clair’s Fabrics and chose a navy print from Recollection – Rhombi Interleaved Smalt – by Katarina Roccella that included all the colours of the quilt top and when cut up, would also look a little scrappy.
Guys, I finished this binding off by hand. I KNOW. I don’t even remember the last time I did hand binding, but when I returned from retreat last month, all I wanted to do was sit on the couch and rest. So I sat and snuggled under the quilt and bound it by hand while watching Gilmore Girls. It was magical. It also meant I got to keep checking out all the beautiful prints my friends used, including Liberty, Alison Glass, Cotton + Steel, Emma Jean Jansen, Lizzy House… I keep finding new bits of interest I never noticed before!

I love it Alyce! Brilliant idea to have them repeat the same block so you could finish this off!

Lovely! I have to concur on the cuddly backing. For a couch quilt, quilting cotton just doesn’t have the same effect!
