There are some designers out there that have a wonderful eye for modern quilt design that make me a tad envious of their aesthetic… They design the kind of art I would love to have in my house as wall art, or on a mug, or as wrapping paper! And the quilts in Quilt Modern Curves & Bold Stripes by Heather Black and Daisy Aschehoug is exactly that.
Heather from Quiltachusetts and Daisy from Warm Folk teamed up to design and write an inspired book all about making curves and stripes with a modern difference. Ain’t nothing drunkard about these curves, ha! There are 15 designs all up, and I love the retro vibe made fresh by the colours.
The book is laid out beautifully, which is something I appreciate – it’s easy to navigate, but also full of beautiful photography! Quilts are by nature a visual medium, so it’s important that they’re portrayed beautifully. Thankfully, for those of us who feel a little daunted at the idea of piecing stripes and then having to make them match beautifully within curves, Heather and Daisy also include how to work with striped material instead.
I’m sure it comes as no surprise that I love the Festoons quilt with such a gorgeous colour palette, but it’s also one that I could actually see myself making too – simple and effective. I’ll also take that side table too, please! I love the black and white stripes contrasted with the coloured half-circles. It reminds me a little of the round licorice included in licorice allsorts packets!
And the Concert quilt blows my mind – those curved stripes are impeccable! So effective.
My other favourite quilt would have to be Retro Spin. I love the way that the same block can look different depending on the placement of fabric. Not to mention the perfect quilting design to match this quilt!
If you love your curved quilts, then you’ll love Quilt Modern Curves & Bold Stripes, that’s for sure! It will take your curved piecing to a whole new level.
