A little while ago, Laurie Wisbrun sent me of her newest Christmas line – Holiday Sweet Tweets – to play with. I was so thrilled to get to play with the fabric, but I felt the pressure to get the design right! I went back and forth over design ideas, almost doing a lantern-esque design until my husband commented that Holiday Sweet Tweets looks like wrapping paper. Wrapping paper… Presents… Awesome idea!
A big part of what I loved about this line when I first saw it on Laurie’s Instagram was the navy chairs print and the colours within. It was the print that inspired my month as queen bee, and I wanted to draw out those colours. So I ordered some Kona solids to match – Ruby, Papaya, Melon, Green Tea and Candy Green.
A whole lot of chain piecing, a bout of bronchitis and the worst tension issues I’ve ever had thanks to trying a new poly batting that was cheaper and easier to get (and will never be bought again), I finally got my Wrapping Paper quilt all finished up!
I had grand FMQ plans, but given the tension issues not being resolved, I stuck to some loopy Christmas lights across the quilt, a holly leaf in between the presents and some swirly ribbons on top of each present. Simple but effective.
I used a Japanese print that had the same navy and teal as Holiday Sweet Tweets and some scraps for the backing. I had to piece the long strips and then add a bit more on the edges to bring it up to width.
Look at those pretty presents! I finished it off with some solid scrappy binding, and it’s definitely fair to say now that I’m on the hand-sewn binding team. So nice to cosy up on the couch with my shows and stitch away.
Holiday Sweet Tweets will be shipping to stores in September but is now available at:
Hawthorne Threads
Or for one lucky reader, I’ve got a little pile of my scraps to share – there’s a fat eighth of each of these five prints and I’ll throw in some strips of solids so you could make your own presents! To enter, leave one comment telling me your favourite Christmas colours are this year.
